As a health worker, improving the health status of the Indonesian people is a responsibility as well as a humanitarian mission. This is a noble work carried out by graduates of health workers. In the midst of the plague COVID-19 opens our eyes that how well their role has been in stopping this outbreak.
Health workers most often seen are those who interact directly with patients, such as nurses and doctors. But behind it all there are many health workers of various expertise that support efforts to prevent transmission and cure of patient diseases, one of which is the graduates of Medical Lab Technology (TLM).
In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Yermianti Tyas Pradani, one of the students from the D4 Medical Laboraotorium Technology Program (D4 TLM) IIK BW joined the volunteer handling of Covid-19 in Mojokerto. When he was a Covid-19 volunteer, Tyas was tasked with screening the driver of the Trowulan Shoe Trowulan Center (PPST) Trowulan Mojokerto. Not only that, Tyas together with PMI Mojokerto City are also actively conducting health outreach to villages to prevent Covid-19 transmission.
There are also D4 TLM alumni who are currently serving at the Sukorame Kediri Community Health Center as Medical Laboratory Technology Experts. He is Diana M. Wulandari, whose action has recently been widely discussed by the media. Diana was in charge of taking samples of the tracing and screening of Covid-19. With this assignment, Diana inevitably had to touch patients who were both positive and PDP Covid-19. Diana's action was quite brave, because she was in charge of taking blood samples (for blood tests), nasal and throat fluids (for swab tests) as well as phlegm testing for Covid-19 cases. Diana is also required to directly 'hold' the virus through her medical devices. When on duty, the sample taker is required to wear level 3 personal protective equipment (PPE), with a three-layer mask, one of which is N-95, which makes it hard for the wearer to breathe. Diana has often dealt with infectious diseases. Since serving in the Sukorame Health Center in 2009, he has been tasked with taking samples of tuberculosis (TB) and diphtheria patients.
Strengthening the Diagnosis of a Disease
Diagnosing a disease is certainly not only based on the symptoms that are seen in the patient. To confirm the diagnosis of a disease, it is necessary to analyze blood, fluids, or samples taken from a patient's body parts. This analysis involves a TLM graduate, where they work in a laboratory analyzing samples taken from patients. Sometimes a TLM is also responsible for taking samples from a patient, such as taking blood. So a TLM does not only work in the laboratory, but also sometimes interacts with patients.
Many general information circulating that to ensure a positive patient of COVID-19 is to undergo a series of lab tests, such as COVID-19 rapid test, blood test, swab test, PCR test, etc. This is where the role of TLM graduates plays a key role in strengthening the diagnosis of a disease. Due to conducting the series of tests the TLMs have the competence.
The Broad Role of Almost all Health Lines
It is true that a TLM works in a laboratory. However, almost all health agencies have laboratories. There is even a stand-alone laboratory. If we mention one by one health agencies, then there are many types, namely hospitals, health centers, clinics, medical centers, laboratories, even companies that produce and market health products. All of that requires the role of a TLM in it. This proves that employment for a TLM graduate is wide open, both in the realm of government (PNS) and the private sector.
In medical institutions, TLM graduates are certainly tasked with analyzing patient samples to strengthen disease diagnoses. But for those who work in companies engaged in the production of medical devices, an ATLM is needed in the validation of the results of testing tools and in terms of marketing. This is because TLM graduates are also required to be able to operate and validate the results of testing of Health equipment.
