The Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) of the Bhakti Wiyata Institute of Health Sciences (IIK) in Kediri collaborated with the Faculty of Dentistry of Brawijaya University (UB) in Malang on a community service activity at the Wali Barokah Islamic Boarding School in Kediri City.

The activity, which took place on Saturday (November 8th), focused on education and dental and oral health checkups for students and pupils within the Islamic boarding school.

The Dean of the FKG of IIK Bhakti Wiyata, Dr. drg. Puspa Dila Rohmaniar, M.Kes., stated that this activity demonstrates IIK Bhakti Wiyata's commitment to supporting the improvement of public health, particularly in the area of dental and oral health.

"Students are the nation's future generation who need to pay attention to their health. Dental and oral health not only affects learning comfort but also impacts overall health. Painful teeth can disrupt concentration and reduce enthusiasm for learning," she said.

Furthermore, Dr. Puspa hopes this activity will raise awareness among the students about maintaining personal hygiene, especially regarding dental and oral care.

"We hope the students can be role models for those around them. Good dental health not only reflects personal hygiene but also reflects enthusiasm and self-confidence," she added.

Meanwhile, a representative from the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) at Brawijaya University, Dr. drg. Merlya Balbeid, MMRS., explained that this activity is a follow-up to the collaboration between Brawijaya University and the Wali Barokah Islamic Boarding School.

"This activity is part of our efforts to prevent caries and other dental and oral diseases. We begin with education at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, then continue with early detection screenings for elementary school-aged children," she explained.

She added that if cases are found requiring further treatment, such as cavities or tooth extractions, patients will be referred to the IIK Bhakti Wiyata Dental and Oral Hospital or the nearest community health center.
According to 2023 Ministry of Health data, 54 percent of children aged 10–14 in Indonesia suffer from tooth decay, but only about 1 percent have had dental checkups.

"We hope that children's literacy about dental health will increase so they can take preventive measures early on. This way, the target of a caries-free Indonesia by 2030 can be achieved," he added.

The Head of the Wali Barokah Islamic Boarding School in Kediri City, Drs. H. Sunarto, M.Sc., expressed his appreciation for this activity. He considered routine health checkups crucial in supporting the students' learning process.

"Health is the foundation for achieving goals. With early checkups like this, we can take preventative measures to ensure the students remain healthy and enthusiastic about pursuing their education," he said.

This collaborative activity includes dental and oral health education for students and teachers of Alhasun Elementary School, dental checkups for elementary school students, and counseling for junior and senior high school students and teachers at Wali Barokah Boarding School.

Asyhari Eko Prayitno, Public Relations Officer of Wali Barokah Islamic Boarding School, stated that approximately 400 students from elementary to high school attended the event.

"Many students complained of toothaches, which ultimately disrupted their enthusiasm for learning. The presence of the team from the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) IIK Bhakti Wiyata and UB was very helpful in providing an understanding of the importance of maintaining dental health," he said.

Through this event, FKG IIK Bhakti Wiyata affirmed its commitment to strengthening the role of health universities in promotive and preventive efforts, while also expanding academic benefits to the wider community, especially in Islamic boarding school-based educational environments.
