The Institute of Health Sciences (IIK) Bhakti Wiyata continues to demonstrate its commitment to expanding access to higher education in Indonesia. Most recently, the country’s oldest health sciences campus officially awarded the Merdeka Timur Scholarship to outstanding youths from Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Wednesday (September 11, 2025).
Through this scholarship program, recipients are granted full opportunities to pursue their studies at IIK Bhakta in two leading programs: Bachelor of Nursing (S1 Keperawatan) and Bachelor of Public Health (S1 Kesehatan Masyarakat). It is hoped that the young generation from Sumba will not only gain access to quality education but also become driving forces in improving public health development in their home region.
IIK Bhakta Rector, Prof. Dr. apt. Muhammad Zainuddin, emphasized that the scholarship represents a concrete step by the institution in supporting the improvement of human resource quality in Eastern Indonesia, particularly in the health sector.
“Students from Sumba who now study at IIK Bhakta are part of the diversity that enriches our academic environment. Their presence brings fresh enthusiasm and represents great hope for the 3T regions (frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped) to have superior human resources in the future,” he stated.
Beyond expanding access to education, the Merdeka Timur Scholarship is also expected to produce professional health workers who will eventually return to their communities and contribute to local development. Equipped with knowledge, skills, and experiences gained during their studies, these scholarship recipients are anticipated to make tangible contributions toward improving public health in NTT.
The scholarship awarding ceremony was held solemnly and emotionally, marked by the enthusiasm of the recipients who are now officially part of the IIK Bhakta family. They expressed gratitude and pledged to make the best use of this golden opportunity.
This initiative reaffirms IIK Bhakta’s position as an inclusive health sciences institution, open to all young Indonesians regardless of background. Guided by the spirit of “From Bhakta for the Nation”, IIK Bhakta remains committed to providing higher education that is not only of high quality but also equitable for all generations across Indonesia.
